Our Strategy

Civil Collective's strategy revolves around decentralizing funding and amplifying local solutions. Civil Collective puts money directly into the hands of grassroots leaders across Uganda who already know the solutions. No red tape. No saviorism. Just trust. Because the people closest to the problem are closest to the answer — and they’ve been waiting for funding that treats them like partners, not projects. Your support grows what’s already rooted.

Small Grants - Big Shifts

Community Philanthropy

Our work focuses on shifting power to local people, recognizing that they are best positioned to understand their needs and design sustainable solutions. Community philanthropy supports the building of local institutions such as community foundations, self-help groups, and local funds, which serve as trusted vehicles for pooling and distributing resources

GRANT MAKING

We give flexible grants ($500–$1,000) to local groups tackling poverty, injustice, and exclusion — no red tape. We trust local leaders to manage funds and make decisions — no need for heavy oversight. We utilize small grants as a strategy to enhance local ownership, foster trust, and encourage collective action. By providing modest funding directly to community-based organizations, informal groups, or local leaders, we enable communities to identify and address their own priorities, rather than relying exclusively on external interventions

LEARNING AND EVIDENCE

We conduct research to demonstrate that community philanthropy fosters trust and social cohesion, enhances local leadership and participation, and improves the effectiveness of aid by ensuring that initiatives are rooted in local realities. Research also shows that small, flexible grants managed by community philanthropy organizations can unlock local innovation and leverage additional resources from diverse stakeholders
